Meet Julie Z!


When did you start doing CrossFit and how did you get into it?

My husband Derrick had been going it for about 3-4 years and I was always scared of it. When we moved to Charlotte two

years ago, I told him I’d try it!

What is your Favorite WOD?

WODs that have rowing and burpees. I know it’s probably weird to like burpees, but it’s something I can actually Rx.

What is your Least Favorite WOD?

Anything with running further than 800M

What is your Favorite Lift?

Push Jerk-Pushing weight over my head makes me feel strong : )

What is your Least favorite lift?

Front Squats

What type of exercise were you doing before CrossFit?

I guess you’d call it circuit training, at a small gym in Hickory.

Tell us a little about your personal and professional accomplishments – what are you proud


I have been a psychologist with the prison system for almost 14 years, and I am proud that I will get to retire at 54. Can’t wait!

Tell us a little bit about yourself (family, other interests, etc.). Anything funny or interesting?

I love 80’s hair bands and I got onstage with Poison once and grabbed Brett Michael’s butt.

What are your CrossFit goals and have you achieved any of those goals, how’s it going so far?

My goal is to not quit, as I am pretty lazy and do not love physical activity. So it’s been two years, and I haven’t quit yet.

Has CrossFit affected your life outside the Gym? I have met really good people that I hang out with outside the gym now.

Do you have any other special memories/achievements during your time here?

Even though I am not a runner and I don’t run, somehow going to crossfit has enabled me to have the stamina to run a 5K, if there is ever an emergency where I need to run a 5K. For me that is a good sign that it is keeping me fit.

What advice would you give to a newbie just joining Reebok CrossFit Charlotte-Uptown?

Try to go at the same time each day, so you can bond with the other people that are always there at that time. I really enjoy feeling like I have a smaller group I belong to within the gym. Sometimes when I am not feeling like going I think about who I will get to see and who might get onto me if I am not there.

Something you might not know about me is? I play in Bocce tournaments every year and my team (which includes Derrick) won 2nd place in the state tournament last year. We are looking for people to be on a team with us in the Charlotte Bocce League. Any takers?!?

Charlotte-Uptown so far?

I think all the coaches are great and are really good about correcting me when I am doing something wrong or helping when I have questions. I feel like people care whether you’re there or not and having that helps me to overcome my struggle with motivation.

How to Compete in the Open

2017 CrossFit Games Open at Reebok CrossFit Charlotte Uptown

The CrossFit Games Open is the first leg of the annual CrossFit Games season and the largest community event in the CrossFit world. It is a five week competition beginning on February 27th and ending on March 27th, where a new workout is released each week. As the name implies, this stage of competition is “open” to anyone who wants to sign up, and for most people it represents a fun way to get involved with their local and global CrossFit community while benchmarking their fitness progress.

For the Open this year at CFC we will be having a competition within the gym with two-person teams. Teams will be male/male and female/female and scoring will be simple – the combined individual scores of the two team members will determine their team score for the week. In order to be a part of the gym’s competition both team members must register for the Open at When you register make sure that you list CrossFit Charlotte as your Affiliate. Open registration costs $20 but is well worth it – go without a Kill Cliff for a few weeks and you’re balanced out.


The competition will be structured in divisions as follows:


We will separate competitors into two age divisions:


“Individuals”: Anyone under 35 years old.

“Masters”: Anyone 35 years old and above.


Within each age division there will be three levels based on workout scaling:


Level 1 – Teams that do the majority of their daily workouts RX’d. These teams will do the Open workouts as prescribed.

Level 2 – Teams that do modified daily workouts more than RX’d. These teams will also do the Open workouts as prescribed.

Level 3 – Teams that modify most/all of their daily workouts. These teams will do the Open workouts modified.


We will name winning teams each week for each division, and then have overall winners for each division at the end of the Open. It will be up to you to find a partner who can compete in the same division as you and to choose your division correctly.  Teams will be reviewed after being submitted to ensure that there is no sandbagging in divisions!


As a final note, keep in mind that the Open and this competition are intended to be FUN and INCLUSIVE! Everyone who considers signing up for the Open faces their own doubts and insecurities about competing and whether it will be worth it, but you will quickly realize that it is much more about community and the opportunity to push yourself more than you normally might than it is cutthroat competition and overwhelming pressure. Every year I hear people say “I was on the fence about signing up but after doing it I’m SO glad that I did.” Be that person this year, you won’t regret it!


Patience, Time and Pull-Ups

As athletes stroll into the gym, a sudden sense of dread overtakes each person who looks at the four-letter word written on the whiteboard: Fran.

Twenty minutes later, the gym is filled with butterfly pull-ups, burning lungs, ripped hands and sweat angels under the growing number of bodies sprawled on the floor.

Ashley Hilliard, 28, can’t yet do a pull-up, so she substituted ring rows. She still pushed herself hard, got her heart rate up and felt good about finishing Fran, but it’s not enough for her anymore, she explained. She wants a pull-up.

“Getting a pull-up has been on my mind since the day I started CrossFit, because I walked in and saw all these people doing them so easily,” Hilliard said. Read more
